Montana Tobacco Quit Line Services

Services provided are based on the needs of the caller:

  • Self Help Only
    • Receives educational materials specific to their needs and is encouraged to call back
  • Questions Only
    • Wants to remain anonymous so no information is sent and the caller is encouraged to call back
  • Brief Motivational Intervention
    • Self help information is sent, initial counseling session and the caller is encouraged to call back
  • Counseling
    • Five proactive counseling sessions
    • Free NRT (patches) for qualified individuals over 18 years of age who are enrolled in counseling. Nicotine gum is available for those individual where the patch is contraindicated

  • How can I refer my patients to the Quit Line?
    • A fax referral sheet is available for your use. The fax referral form contains patient consent to have the Quit Line call them, provides for release of information to the health care provider and a physician's consent for nicotine replacement therapy. The Quit Line will call the patient and encourage them to enroll in counseling and if they do and it is indicated have NRT sent to the patient.
  • Can adolescents call the Quit Line?
    • Yes, adolescents are welcome to call the Quit Line. The FDA has not approved NRT for persons under 18 so they are not eligible for that benefit.
  • Is the number of calls limited to five per individual?
    • No, the individual may have as many calls as needed to quit and stay quit. The research indicates that five sessions is the optimal number for telephone cessation counseling. Individuals who relapse are also encouraged to call the Quit Line. Studies show that individuals will quit several times before they stay quit.
  • How does the NRT get to the individual?
    • Two weeks of NRT is mailed directly to the individual.
  • Is the Quit Line prepared to provide culturally appropriate services Native Americans?
    • The Quit Line staff is trained to provide culturally appropriate services to Native Americans including an understanding of the sacred use of tobacco.
  • Who provides the services of the Quit Line?
    • National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, ranked the nation's #1 respiratory hospital by U.S. News&World Report, operates the Montana Tobacco Quit Line. National Jewish also operates the Colorado and Ohio Tobacco Quit Lines, as well as the UCare Tobacco Cessation Line in Minnesota and the nationwide LungLine
  • How is the Quit Line staffed?
    • Counselors including Registered Nurses
    • Bachelor-degree or higher educational level
    • PRN staff available for heavy advertising, high-volume
      times of year (January), etc.
    • RNs available to work with clients with chronic diseases
      (Asthma, COPD, heart-disease, mental health, etc)
    • Specific Counselors specialize in Teen Smokers, Spit
      Tobacco, Prenatal Smokers, Stress Reduction, Weight
      Loss and Exercise Programs
